My Background

I grew up surrounded by alfalfa and wheat fields in rural Montana, spending my childhood looking for bugs, reading books and bird hunting with my dad and yellow lab, Scout. My mom is an elementary school teacher and my dad is a retired fireman. I am also a proud uncle.

My first job out of high school was as a reporter for my local weekly newspaper. That experience nudged me to major in journalism at Western Washington University, where I gained real world experience writing and editing student publications. Before joining the Yakima Herald-Republic, I worked for the Anacortes American and Salish Current and have additional experience as a wildland firefighter, bookseller, and Washington Conservation Corpsmember. I love thinking about new ways to serve readers and develop a better news product.

I am so happy to now be living and working in the Yakima Valley.

Ethics

Ethics and professionalism are central to my what I do. I follow the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics, which means I will never accept gifts from sources, join or donate to any political cause or party, and always do my best to minimize harm while conducting my work.

I want to be as fair and accurate as possible. If you believe there is something I could’ve done better, please let me or an editor know.
