Current Research

My primary areas of research focus on workforce issues.  I am currently analyzing data from two recent studies of the early childhood education workforce (co author Brenda Boyd).  One study is comparing the quality of programming in two sets of child care centers: child care centers receiving additional dollars to provide Head Start enhanced services, and centers operating without those enhancements.

The other study is a four year evaluation of a state pilot project to subsidize child care provider wages in an attempt to reduce turnover of employees and improve quality of care. Increased wages are based on employee early childhood education, length of employment, and level of responsibility (providing a career and wage ladder for child care providers). There are 125 pilot child care centers and a matched set of 125 comparison centers (and their approximately 3000 employees) involved in the study. Nine waves of data were collected over four years to analyze the effectiveness of the pilot.

Additionally, I am currently analyzing data collected through a telephone survey with 280 BA and MA WSU HD graduates. The survey included questions on: graduates' careers, perceptions of the job market for our graduates, and perceptions of strengths and possible needed changes in our curriculum.

Personal Information

My students say I "talk fast with lots of animation." As any family ecologist worth her salt, I attribute that to my family, community and culture of origin. I was born in the greater New York city area, the youngest (and by far the shortest...) of 4 children. Now I have a family of my own with 3 sons and a husband. My outside of work activities -- mainly traveling, gardening, skiing -- are in flux and developing as my husband and I adjust to the "empty nest" with our three sons in graduate school, working and independent.
