Gerontology Certificate

 

Students specializing in Aging and Gerontology are preparing themselves for careers in institutions and settings that focus on older individuals. Included are adult day care centers, nursing homes, home care services, community organizations that deliver services to older adults, and many others. The following are instructions for HD majors who have selected theGerontology Certifcate option:

  • Complete the core of required HD courses
    • Select the HD 420 (rather than the HD 320) option
    • Select the HD 498 internship option
  • Complete a minor in Program in Aging. Students complete course requirements to minor in the Program in Aging. In addition, the internship required for the HD degree also serves as the final requirement for the student to earn a Gerontology Certificate.
  • The following courses are required for the Program in Aging/Gerontology Certificate. Note that two of the courses (HD 203 and HD 498) are included in the required HD core. Other HD courses selected for the Program in Aging may also serve as electives toward the HD degree. However, although courses may fill requirements for both the HD major and the Program in Aging minor, the credit hours cannot be counted more than once.
    • FSHN 130 Nutrition for living
    • HD 203 Adulthood Through the Older Years
    • Psych 363 Psychology of Aging
    • Soc 356 Sociology of Aging
    • HD 498 Internship
    • 6 credit hours of approved elective courses (see list of courses below)
  • An overall GPA of 2.5 is required for the group of courses required for the Program in Aging/Gerontology Certificate.
  • When requirements are completed for both the HD degree and the Program in Aging/Gerontology Certificate, the student is awarded with a Gerontology Certificate. This shows that the student has completed a course of study that focuses on individuals in later life. (Note: This does not mean the student is state certified.)

 

**Note: All HD majors are required to take 42 credit hours of Human Development courses.**
