Bachelor of Arts in Human Development
Certificate in Family Studies
Students specializing in Family Studies are preparing themselves for careers in institutions and community agencies that provide services to families. Included are family counseling centers, parent education organizations, family crisis centers, battered women's shelters, and many other organizations that address family needs and issues. The following are instructions for HD majors who have selected the Certificate in Family Studies:
- Complete the core of required HD courses
- Select the HD 320 (rather than the HD 420) option
- Select the HD 498 internship option
- The following courses are required for the Certificate in Family Studies. Note that three of the courses (HD 204, HD 320, and HD 498) are included in the required HD core. The other HD courses count as electives toward the HD degree; any required courses taken outside of the department count as general WSU electives.
- HD 204 Family Systems
- HD 301 Families in Crisis
- HD 302 Parent-Child Relations
- HD 304 Intimate Relationships Across the Lifespan
- HD 320 Resource Management and Problem Solving
- HD 350 Diversity in Contemporary Families
- HD 406 Work and the Family
- HD 498 Internship
- An overall GPA of 2.5 is required for the group of courses required for the Family Studies Certificate.
- When requirements are completed for both the HD degree and the Family Studies Specialty, the student is awarded with a Certificate in Family Studies certificate. This shows that the student has completed a course of study that focuses on family relationships and issues (Note: This does not mean the student is state certified.)
