Certificate in Early Childhood Development & Care
Students specializing in Early Childhood and Care are preparing themselves for careers in institutions and settings that focus on young children. Included are child care centers, pre-school settings, Child Protective Services, crisis nurseries, and many others. The following are instructions for HD majors who have selected the Early Childhood specialty:
- Complete the core of required HD courses
- Select the HD 420 (rather than the HD 320) option
- Select the HD 446 internship option and register for 6 hours
- The following courses are required for the Certificate in Early Childhood Development and Care. Note that three of the courses (HD 201, HD 420, and HD 446) are included in the required HD core. The other HD courses count as electives toward the HD degree.
- HD 201 Prenatal Through Age 8
- HD 341 Learning & Guidance in Early Childhood (or HD 345)
- HD 342 Curriculum for Early Childhood Programs
- HD 420 Application of Human Development Theories
- HD 446 Early Childhood Practicum (Internship)
- HD 449 Seminar in Early Childhood
- HD 482 Child Assessment & Evaluation

An overall GPA of 2.5 is required for the Certificate in Early Childhood Development and Care.

When requirements are completed for both the HD degree and the certificate, the student is awarded with a Certificate in Early Childhood Development and Care. This shows that the student has completed a course of study that focuses on early childhood. (Note: This does not mean the student is state certified.)
