Certificate in Adolescence

Students specializing in Adolescence are preparing themselves for careers in institutions and settings that focus on teens and youth. Included are adolescent counseling centers, youth programs, the juvenile justice system, and many other organizations. The following are instructions for HD majors who have selected the Adolescence specialty:

  • Complete the core of required HD courses
    • Select the HD 420 (rather than the HD 320) option
    • Select the HD 498 internship option
  • The following courses are required for the Certificate in Adolescence. Note that three of the courses (HD 202, HD 420, and HD 498) are included in the required HD core. The other HD courses count as electives toward the HD degree, and required courses taken outside of the department count as general WSU electives
    • HD 202 Middle Childhood Through Adolescence
    • HD 302 Parent-Child Relations
    • HD 304 Intimate Relationships
    • HD 408 Advanced Adolescent Development
    • HD 420 Application of Human Development Theories
    • HD 498 Internship
    • Psych 230 Human Sexuality
    • Soc 362 Juvenile Delinquency
    • Two other HD elective courses (see options below)
  • An overall GPA of 2.5 is required for the group of courses required for the Certificate in Adolescence.
  • When requirements are completed for both the HD degree and the Adolescence Specialty, the student is awarded with a Specialty in Adolescence certificate. This shows that the student has completed a course of study that focuses on adolescent development and issues (Note: This does not mean the student is state certified.)
