Bachelor of Arts in Human Development
Certificate Options
Students in the Department of Human Development have a number of academic choices as they pursue a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
Two teaching certificate programs are available:
- Early Childhood Education
- Family & Consumer Sciences Education
Students may pursue a general Human Development degree.
Along with a Human Development degree, students may opt to specialize and receive a certificate in one of four areas:
Why a certificate?
- Helps students focus their course of study
- Will assure that students have substantive training in the designated area of study
- Will enhance students' career opportunities. The certificate appears on the student's transcript and students can include the certificate as part of their resume
How do I pursue a cerificate?
- First, students take the designated courses for a general degree in Human Development.
- Second, students select an area of specialty. HD courses not contained in the core requirements are taken as HD electives.
- Students will refer to the certification option form to select courses, and those courses are also listed on the general HD advising form. Any courses required for the specialty, that are outside of the HD department, are taken as general electives.
- Students do not have to take extra course work or earn extra credit hours toward graduation in order to pursue a specialty. The required course work is built into the general HD requirements and WSU expectations for overall credit hours (120 minimum).
- Students seeking the certificate in Gerontology are referred to the Program in Aging/Gerontology Certificate minor administered by the HD department.
- When requirements are completed for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Development, along with requirements for the designated certificate, a Certificate of Specialty is awarded to the student. (Note: This does not mean a student is state certified. It does show that the student has completed a focused course of studies, along with an internship, in a designated area.)
- Students must maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 in those courses selected for the specialty area
- When all of the coursework and the internship are completed, the information is forwarded to the Registrar's Office. The student then submits the application for the Certificate form, along with the $50 fee to the Registrar.
