General Human Development provides students with a strong background in development across the life span, within a variety of contexts including the family, the community and society. Through course work selection, students may stress family studies or a particular segment of the life span such as early childhood, adolescence or later adulthood. All students complete an internship experience. Graduates are prepared to work with children, adolescents or adults in numerous settings such as child care programs, community action centers, DSHS, residential treatment centers, or community based programs for the elderly. Along with a Human Development degree, students may opt to specialize in one of four areas: Early Childhood; Adolescence; Aging; and Family Studies.

The Preschool-Third Grade Teacher Certification offers students the opportunity to receive two Washington teaching credentials: Preschool-Third Grade as the primary certification and Kindergarten through Eighth grade as the supporting endorsement. These credentials allow graduates to teach in public school classrooms serving children from 3 years old through eighth grade. Students complete course work in child development, guidance and discipline, and curriculum in the Department of Human Development and also take courses in the Department of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Certification prepares students to instruct junior and senior high school students and adults in Family and Consumer Sciences, which may cover such subjects as parenting, leadership, health, family financial management and nutrition. Students complete course work in human development, nutrition, apparel merchandising and interior design. Many students also choose to obtain supporting endorsement in areas such as health or Spanish education.
